Our crops at Vilonia burned from lack of rain this year.
Roy tried selling cars and had orders for three, but after the crops failed
the orders were canceled.
We saw an ad in the paper, "Men Wanted to Work at Sawmill–Crossett, AR."
And Roy hitchhiked to Crossett in the fall of 1926. I came on the train as
soon as he went to work and found an apartment. The huge smokestack with
"Crossett" on it could be seen as you came into town, towering above the
powerhouse. As Roy worked in the powerhouse, the smokestack was a special
landmark for us.
We now had electricity, natural gas for cooking, and water piped to the
back porch, but we still had "outdoor plumbing."
